Francisco de Goya
Francisco de Goya y Lucientes was born in Fuendetodos, 40 km south of the city of Zaragoza. He was trained as a painter in the Aragonese capital and it was here that he received his first commissions. The success of his frescoes in the Pilar basilica led to the signing of new contracts.
His family home in Fuendetodos has been preserved; in addition, there are a number of workshops and exhibition areas where numerous acts and conferences for professionals are held. The most popular of these is the Etchings Museum where there is an exhibition of the maestro’s four great series of etchings. This is complemented by a visit to the Ignacio Zuloaga Exhibition Hall.
In the church of San Juan el Real in Calatayud are the pendentives that the genius painted with the theme of the Holy Parents. Goya also admired the Mudejar influence in this city, which dates back to Roman times, in Bilbilis castle.
In Muel, 30 km from Zaragoza on the motorway to Teruel, it is possible to see the pendentives of the Virgin of the Source hermitage, set within the park above the river Huerva which still maintains its Roman dam. A must-visit, also in Muel, is the Ceramics School and Workshop which keeps the pottery tradition alive.
The Cartuja de Aula Dei, just a few kilometres north of Zaragoza, has works from his juvenile period; the stand-out pieces are the magnificent set of frescoes showing harmony, elegance in its folds and the energetic touch of Goya.
There are mature paintings in the Museum of Zaragoza and in the Camón Aznar Museum which, also, contains his completed sets of engravings.
